Graduate Profile of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Christian Civilization

At the completion of the B.A. (Honours) in Christian Civilization the graduates will possess a critical and creative appreciation towards the scriptures, history, doctrines, art, literature, morals and practices of Christian religion and communicate them effectively. They will be familiar and appreciate the modern trends in Christian thinking and through a comparative approach they will be able to value the richness of other religious traditions and thereby relate, work together and create a peaceful and harmonious society. They will also be equipped with meta-cognitive skills, competency in English, proficiency in IT components and possess a love for lifelong learning with the intention of promoting a humanistic ethos based on Christian values. They will be global citizens with gender sensitivity and competent for careers in religious, humanitarian and social entrepreneurship outlets related to justice, peace, human rights, counseling and wellbeing.

Graduate Profile of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Christian Civilization

The Department of Christian Civilization aims to produce graduates with its profile which falls in line with the vision, mission and objectives of the Faculty of Arts which are consistent with those of the University of Jaffna. A Bachelor of Arts (Honours) graduate in Christian Civilization of the University of Jaffna will have the following attributes:

Academic Excellence:

  • Possess a clear and higher order of thinking, including an estimation of conceptual and theoretical elements in the core fields of Christian studies.

  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the Christian scriptures, mysticism and moral values and be able to interpret them according to the contemporary life situation.

  • Be competent to express their knowledge with a critical perspective in the fields of Christian studies, ethics and comparative religious studies.

  • Capable of assessing the reality of global religio-cultural pluralism and be convinced that the role of religions in establishing peace through tolerance and cohesion.

  • Be able to analyze critically the Christian tradition to respond to the current global needs and have a weltanschauung of the contemporary global challenges and social evils of slavery, discriminations, superstitions and other inhuman practices.

  • Be able to reiterate the methodologies, philosophical and Theological bases and the characteristics of scholarship, research and creative work of the subjects they have studied.

Social Responsibility:

  • Adopt the current trends of Christianity to promote humanistic ethos and apply them for the discriminative and oppressive issues of class, gender, caste, linguistic and other unjust systems of the society.

  • Be convinced to work for justice and vindicate human rights basing on Christian humanistic ethos.

  • Able to defend the value and dignity of each individual and build a responsible society basing on Christian and human values.

  • Able to pursue academic activities and be involved in specialization useful to the society on any field pertaining to Christian studies.

  • Ability to impart effectively the knowledge learned in the field of Christian studies to the ordinary lay people.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Christian Civilization Graduates will be able to:

PO 1: Interpret the learnt contents of Christian scriptures, mysticism and moral values to the life situations of particular context.

PO 2: Communicate the Christian values and ideas effectively by recapitulating the learnt methodologies, philosophical and theological bases  of Christian studies to promote research and creative work.

PO 3: Work together in groups and facilitate the teams with the Christian spirit to critically engage in the society while maintaining  independence and intellectual integrity.

PO 4: Create new thinking by identifying and analyzing the problems related to the field of Christian studies.

PO 5: Be in healthy relationship with the people of other religions to promote peace and harmony in the society.

PO 6: Appreciate the pluralistic nature of the society especially the reality of religio-cultural pluralism and the role of religions in establishing  peace through inter-religious dialogue.

  • Equipping the students with meta-cognitive skills, competency in English and proficiency in IT components.

  • Facilitating the students to develop a team spirit based on Christian outlook and acquire other soft skills needed to work together in their employed environment.

  • Empowering the students with a comparative understanding of the local religious traditions to promote a harmonious society with humanistic ethos in the local pluralistic milieu.

  • Inculcating in students attitudes like self-esteem, sense of freedom, responsibility, generosity, interest in the society, sincerity, courage, cooperation, punctuality, resilience, open mindedness and assertiveness.
