The Going Down Ceremony of the final-year students of the Department of Christian Civilization, University of Jaffna, was held on November 8, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Chaplaincy. This special occasion was a heartfelt farewell to the outgoing students, marking the culmination of their academic journey in the department. The event was filled with gratitude, reflection, and celebration, as faculty members, juniors, and guests gathered to honour the outgoing batch.

Distinguished Presence and Inspirational Address

The ceremony was graced by Mr. C. Ilankovan, the Chief Guest, who is the grandson of S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, a renowned Tamil leader whose contributions are studied in the department’s ‘Christian Leadership’ course unit. His presence added historical and intellectual significance to the event. In his inspirational address, he encouraged the students to apply the values of leadership, service, and faith in their future endeavours.

Expressions of Gratitude and Nostalgia

One of the most emotional moments of the event was when the final-year students shared their reflections on their experiences in the department. They expressed deep gratitude to their lecturers and staff for their guidance, support, and dedication throughout their academic journey. Many students spoke about how the department had shaped their understanding of theology, leadership, and interfaith harmony, preparing them for life beyond university.

Cultural Performances and Celebratory Atmosphere

The junior students organized entertaining performances, including music, drama, and poetry recitals, to honour the departing batch. These performances were not only entertaining but also deeply symbolic, reflecting the bonds of friendship, mentorship, and shared experiences among students of the department. The hall was filled with emotions, as laughter and tears blended in a bittersweet celebration.

Fellowship and Conclusion

The event concluded with a fellowship lunch, providing an opportunity for students and faculty to engage in casual conversations, reminisce about their journey, and celebrate their achievements together. The warm and inclusive atmosphere made it a memorable send-off for the graduating students.

Looking Ahead with Hope

The Department of Christian Civilization takes great pride in nurturing students academically, spiritually, and ethically. The Going Down Ceremony is not just a farewell but a reminder that the values instilled in them -faith, leadership, and social responsibility – will guide them in their future paths.
