The Vatican Ambassador for Sri Lanka, His Excellency, Most Revd. Dr. Brian Udaigwe was on a three day official visit to Jaffna from the 25th to 27th of July 2023. As a part of his agenda, he paid a brief visit to the University of Jaffna on the 26th of July 2023. Rev. Dr. P.J. Jebaratnam, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Jaffna also accompanied him.
Vatican is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It is an independent and full-fledged state in the world surrounded by Rome, Italy. It is the home of the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture. It was established as an independent state in 1929, to enable the Pope to exercise his universal authority over the Catholics.
A Vatican Ambassador is the official political representative of the Vatican state and also a religious representative of Pope to the Catholics of the given region.
On his brief visit to the University of Jaffna, he was welcomed by Prof. S. Sri Satkunarajah, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. Balasundarampillai, former Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. J.C. Paul Rohan, the Head of the Department of Christian Civilization and other staff and students of the Department. As per the Tamil culture, he was honoured with a golden shawl and garland by the Vice Chancellor. Then he was ushered to the Board Room of the university where he was greeted and welcomed by the Registrar and others present. The Vice Chancellor briefed him about the various activities of the university and described how religious, ethnic and cultural harmony is maintained in the pluri set up of the university. He also extended an invitation to the Ambassador to grace one of the events organized by the Department of Christian Civilization.
The Ambassador thanked for the welcome he was given and expressed his willingness to visit the University on a separate occasion. Then he spent some time with the students before his departure from the university.
The present ambassador is a Nigerian by origin and has his PhD in Civic and Canon Law.
