On September 11, 2024, the Department of Christian Civilization, University of Jaffna, proudly hosted the launch of the second edition of Pamalai, a remarkable poetry collection by Varakavi B.L. Amirthanathapillai. Originally published in 1944 at St. Joseph Catholic Press, Jaffna, Pamalai holds a unique place in Tamil literature as it is composed in the Chiththirakavi form – an intricate poetic structure where the lines remain the same regardless of the direction in which they are read. Due to the complexity of this literary style, only a select few poets have mastered its execution, making this work an invaluable part of Tamil literary heritage.
The second edition of Pamalai was published by Loyal Publication, Colombo, in 2024, meticulously undertaken by the poet’s grandson, Mr. Emil Chandrakumar Joseph. The launch event was especially significant as Mr. Joseph himself was present to introduce both the book and the esteemed poet to the students.
During the event, Mr. Joseph elaborated on the historical significance of Pamalai, the challenges of preserving rare poetic forms, and the importance of reviving Tamil literary traditions. The discussion also emphasized the artistic and cultural value of Siththirakavi poetry, inspiring students to appreciate and explore Tamil literature beyond conventional structures.
The Department of Christian Civilization was honoured to host this literary event, which not only celebrated a pioneering poet but also reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting indigenous literary forms. The department remains committed to bridging literature, faith, and cultural studies, encouraging students to engage with and contribute to the rich literary traditions of Tamil Christian heritage.
