On February 26, 2024, the Department of Christian Civilization, University of Jaffna, hosted a significant encounter with the Student Christian Movement of Sri Lanka (SCMSL). The event brought together SCMSL office bearers, including Ms. Natali Natanielz (Vice Chairperson), Rev. Nilushan Herath (Co-General Secretary), Ms. Anna Claudia (Co-General Secretary), and Mr. Timothy Kumarathunga (Treasurer), who were accompanied by Rev. V. Daniel Jeyaruban, Jaffna Regional Coordinator.

The Head of the Department, Rev. Prof. Paul Rohan, along with faculty members and students, actively participated in the discussions. The SCMSL representatives provided a detailed overview of their movement’s work across Sri Lanka, emphasizing ecumenism and inclusivity, as the SCMSL welcomes members from all Christian denominations, fostering unity beyond church divisions.

A key focus of the meeting was exploring future collaborations between the Department of Christian Civilization and SCMSL. Discussions revolved around student engagement, leadership training, and faith-based social initiatives, aligning with the department’s commitment to theological education and social responsibility.

A significant highlight of the encounter was the awarding of a scholarship to a student, ensuring monthly financial assistance to support his education. This gesture reinforced the shared mission of SCMSL and the department in nurturing both academic and spiritual growth among students.

The encounter concluded on a note of mutual understanding and enthusiasm for continued partnership. The Department of Christian Civilization remains committed to fostering interfaith dialogue, student empowerment, and meaningful engagement with Christian organizations, further enriching the academic and spiritual journey of its students.
