On Thursday, 24 April 2025, at 9.00 a.m., the Department of Christian Civilization of the University of Jaffna organized a solemn memorial service in commemoration of the passing of Pope Francis, the 226th Pope. The event was held at the Kailasapathy Auditorium of the University of Jaffna and brought together members of the academic community to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the late pontiff.
The service was graced by the presence of Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, along with the Deans of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Hindu Studies, and the Faculty of Medicine. In addition, the President of the University of Jaffna Teachers’ Association, professors, heads of departments, lecturers, and a large gathering of students participated in the event, reflecting the collective respect and admiration for Pope Francis.
The memorial service provided an opportunity for the university community to reflect on Pope Francis’s enduring commitment to peace, justice, and compassion. The Department of Christian Civilization expressed its gratitude to all participants, noting that the event served as a meaningful occasion to honour the memory of a global spiritual leader whose vision continues to inspire across cultures and faith traditions.
