As part of its ongoing commitment to academic enrichment and social engagement, the Department of Christian Civilization, University of Jaffna, had the privilege of hosting Ms. Angelique Appeyroux, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Sri Lanka on the 7th of April 2026. She was accompanied by Ms. Padmini Balachandran, Field Team Leader, Vavuniya ICRC.
Despite her demanding schedule, Ms. Angelique graciously accepted the Department’s invitation and visited the Department, providing a valuable opportunity for meaningful interaction with both staff and students.
The visit was marked by two significant components. Firstly, a constructive discussion was held between Ms. Angelique and Rev. Prof. J.C. Paul Rohan, Head of the Department, focusing on their respective missions. The exchange highlighted the shared commitment to human dignity, social responsibility, and the holistic formation of individuals. Particular attention was given to the work of the ICRC in Sri Lanka, especially its engagement with communities affected by the post-war context, including its efforts to accompany families of missing and disappeared persons. The Department acknowledged and appreciated the ICRC’s sustained humanitarian commitment under her leadership.
Secondly, Ms. Angelique engaged directly with the students of the Department. In a simple and approachable manner, she explained the mission and activities of the ICRC, emphasizing values such as community building, solidarity, and service to vulnerable populations. Her interaction provided the students with a rare and enriching exposure to humanitarian work at both national and international levels. The session was highly appreciated by the students, who benefited from her insights and encouragement.
The Department considers this visit a significant academic and formative event, contributing to the broader vision of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical engagement in society. It is hoped that such interactions will continue in the future, fostering collaboration in areas related to humanitarian service, reconciliation, and community development in Sri Lanka.
