On 10 March 2026, the Department of Christian Civilization at the University of Jaffna had the privilege of receiving Mrs. Debbie Sinnarasa Philip, whose visit marked a deeply meaningful moment of remembrance, continuity, and renewed commitment to student welfare and academic advancement. Mrs. Philip is the wife of the late Mr. Anton Sinnarasa Philip, a distinguished humanitarian, ardent well-wisher, and generous benefactor of the Department, whose legacy continues to shape the academic and personal journeys of many students.
Having been long settled in Canada, both Mr. and Mrs. Philip maintained a profound interest in the education and upliftment of students in Sri Lanka. Motivated by Mr. Philip’s deep affinity for the Tamil language and the Christian faith, the couple extended substantial financial assistance to students over the years. Their contributions also included providing intellectual encouragement and active support during the department’s international research conferences in 2018 and 2024. In addition, Mr. Philip initiated funding schemes designed to foster students’ aspirations towards higher education, thereby creating opportunities for academic growth and global exposure.
Following the sudden demise of Mr. Anton Sinnarasa Philip in 2023, Mrs. Debbie Sinnarasa Philip has continued these philanthropic endeavors with remarkable dedication and a strong sense of purpose. Her visit to the department during her stay in Sri Lanka was both a personal and institutional gesture, reflecting her enduring commitment to sustaining and expanding the vision she shared with her late husband.
During her visit, Mrs. Philip was warmly received by the Head of the Department, Rev. Prof. J.C. Paul Rohan, along with members of the academic staff and students. During the encounter, she emphasized that assistance would be made available wherever necessary, particularly in helping students navigate opportunities for international study and engagement.
The visit also included a shared lunch with the students, which provided an informal yet meaningful setting for deeper interaction. During this time, she assured that her team stands ready to extend appropriate support in facilitating students’ engagement with the wider global community, thereby broadening their academic and cultural horizons.
Overall, the visit of Mrs. Debbie Sinnarasa Philip stands as a significant and heartfelt event in the department’s calendar for 2026. It not only honored the enduring legacy of Mr. Anton Sinnarasa Philip but also reaffirmed a continuing partnership grounded in generosity, vision, and commitment to education.
