On 3rd March 2026, the Department of Christian Civilization at the University of Jaffna had the distinct privilege of welcoming Rev. Fr. Teyol Machado, SJ, Director of the Navachethana Centre for Non-Formal Education, who visited the department accompanied by Rev. Fr. Antony Pius, SJ, a Jesuit priest and scholar known for his deep cultural and intellectual roots in Karnataka and Kannur. This visit, initiated by the Head of the Department, Rev. Prof. J.C. Paul Rohan, formed part of the department’s broader vision of fostering meaningful academic engagement that extends beyond classroom learning into the sphere of social responsibility and action.
The visit began with an interactive and intellectually stimulating session with the academic staff of the department, during which both visiting scholars shared their extensive experience in the field of non-formal education and community-based initiatives. The discussion highlighted the Jesuit tradition of education, which emphasizes not only intellectual formation but also the development of a strong commitment to social justice and civic engagement, often realized through experiential learning and grassroots. Fr. Teyol Machado elaborated on the work carried out at the Navachethana Centre, particularly focusing on how non-formal educational practices can empower marginalized communities and foster sustainable social transformation. Fr. Antony Pius complemented these insights by reflecting on the importance of cultural sensitivity and contextual awareness in social action, drawing from his experiences in diverse regions of South India.
Following the staff interaction, the visiting Jesuit scholars engaged in a lively and thought-provoking session with the students of the department. The discussion underscored the value of experiential learning approaches, widely recognized in Jesuit pedagogy as essential for nurturing reflective, socially conscious individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
The visit proved to be highly significant in reinforcing the department’s commitment to integrating academic inquiry with social engagement. It provided both staff and students with valuable insights into how education can serve as a transformative force when aligned with real-world experiences and a genuine concern for justice and human development.
Overall, the visit of Fr. Teyol Machado, SJ and Fr. Antony Pius, SJ stands as a meaningful and enriching event in the academic calendar of the Department of Christian Civilization for the year 2026.
